Rare Blue Dolomite from Peña Blanca Mine, Colombia | Gemmy Light Blue Crystals on Matrix
A rare and highly sought-after variety of dolomite featuring an unusually saturated blue tone, ranging from soft sky blue to a subtle bluish-purple.
This material comes from the Peña Blanca Mine (Peñas Blancas) near San Pablo de Borbur in Boyacá, Colombia—an area best known for emerald mining. In the upper levels of the deposit, a limited pocket produced this distinct blue dolomite, a color that is exceptionally uncommon for the species.
The crystals are small but sharply defined, typically forming prismatic to rhombohedral shapes. Many pieces show a glassy, transparent to gemmy quality, with smooth or slightly curved faces. They are often set against contrasting matrix, which may include calcite, pyrite, or natural host rock, adding depth and dimension.
This was not a continuous production material. It is generally considered a one-time or very limited find, making quality specimens increasingly difficult to source.
A strong collector specimen, especially for those focused on unusual color expressions in common minerals or Colombian locality material beyond emeralds.
